The *earth elemental* is among the creatures about whom understanding is
incomplete, though they have been studied for a long time. For powerful
wizards, the art of summoning up these powerful manifestations of the primaeval
*earth* is well-established. While violent by nature, control over these -
sentient, though not especially bright - creatures is relatively easy to
establish, with centuries of documented experience. And yet, very little is
known about the *ultimate nature* of these creatures. Why do they exist? Was
the spark of life and a dim torch of intelligence placed inside these creatures
by some deity, by *extraplanar beings*, or by the act of creation itself?

*Summon Earth Elemental* (/In Ort Ylem Xen/)
This spell calls up a creature made of Earth, generally in the shape of a man,
to perform the bidding of the caster. With the appropriate additional spells,
it follows a few terse commands, usually understanding statements to retrieve
or open things.

When conjuring an elemental, be sure to have an appropriate source of *earth*
available: modern floors don't count.

To ensure a safe summoning, a spell to *protect* the caster is suggested.

For when the elemental is becoming unruly, the *Call Quake* spell (/Kal Vas
Ylem Por/) is an effective remedy.
